Dorm rooms are by far the easiest place to meet new people when you’re in a hostel. The reason being that you’re sort of forced out of politeness to say hi whenever someone new comes in, and when you’ve been travelling for a long time you get into the habit of just striking up a conversation with anyone who comes into the room. The fact that you know you’ll be sharing with other people means you know even as a solo traveler you will meet other people.
All dorm rooms have en-suit bathroom and lockers where you can lock away all your valuables. So there isn’t really any extra security issues by sharing a room with other people.
